Garden Design Altrincham
Altrincham gardens are rarely big — but the best ones don’t need to be. Across the Victorian and Edwardian streets of Altrincham, Hale and Bowdon, the typical brief we’re given is a compact rear garden, often overlooked, sometimes shaded by neighbouring buildings or mature trees, that the owners want to feel bigger, more private and genuinely usable. That’s a design challenge we enjoy, and one we’ve solved many times. Cheshire Landscape Gardener is based in Mere, near Knutsford — about 15 minutes away — and Altrincham has been part of our regular working area for years, with completed projects in the town we’re proud of.

Making Small Gardens Live Large
A few principles do most of the work in compact Altrincham plots:
- Diagonals and destinations. Running paving or sight lines at an angle, and giving the eye somewhere to land — a seating area, a specimen tree, a water bowl — makes a short garden read as a deeper one.
- Privacy without a fortress. Overlooked from three sides is normal here. Pleached trees, slatted screens and well-placed pergolas create enclosure without blocking light the way a two-metre fence does.
- One material, done well. In a small space, a single high-quality paving choice — large-format porcelain is the most requested — looks calmer and more generous than a patchwork of surfaces.
- Levels as features. Many gardens in Hale and Bowdon step up or down from the house. A well-built step and a low retaining wall can turn that nuisance into the garden’s best architectural feature.
Period Houses, Modern Gardens
Plenty of our Altrincham clients live in period properties but want a contemporary garden. The two aren’t in conflict if the materials are chosen with care — buff and grey tones that pick up the brickwork, natural stone where it suits the house, clean-lined planting with enough softness to avoid feeling stark. And as everywhere in this corner of Cheshire, we deal with heavy clay soil honestly: drainage and ground preparation are designed in from the start, not discovered as an extra halfway through the build.
