Altrincham gardens are rarely big — but the best ones don’t need to be. A few principles do most of the work in compact Altrincham plots:

• Diagonals and destinations. Running paving or sight lines at an angle, and giving the eye somewhere to land — a seating area, a specimen tree, a water bowl — makes a short garden read as a deeper one.
• Privacy without a fortress. Overlooked from three sides is normal here. Pleached trees, slatted screens and well-placed pergolas create enclosure without blocking light the way a two-metre fence does.
• One material, done well. In a small space, a single high-quality paving choice — large-format porcelain is the most requested — looks calmer and more generous than a patchwork of surfaces.
• Levels as features. Many gardens in Hale and Bowdon step up or down from the house. A well-built step and a low retaining wall can turn that nuisance into the garden’s best architectural feature.
