A driveway is the hardest-working surface on your property: it carries a couple of tonnes of vehicle several times a day, sheds hundreds of litres of water in a Cheshire downpour, and it’s the first thing every visitor judges your house by. Building one that stays flat, drains properly and still looks sharp in fifteen years is a groundworks job as much as a paving job — and that’s how we approach it.
First, the Rule Most Homeowners Don’t Know
Since 2008, paving over a front garden with an impermeable surface larger than five square metres requires either planning permission or — far more sensibly — a driveway that handles its own rainwater. That means permeable surfaces like resin-bound gravel or permeable block paving, or drainage that directs run-off into your garden or a soakaway rather than the road. We design every driveway to comply from the outset, which matters even more on Cheshire’s clay, where water that isn’t managed simply sits.
Choosing Your Surface
Block paving — the all-rounder: huge choice of colours and patterns, individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if services are ever dug up, and permeable versions solve the drainage rule neatly.
Resin-bound gravel — smooth, modern, naturally permeable and almost weed-free. The premium contemporary choice, and the one we’re asked about most.

Tarmac — unbeatable value per square metre on larger drives, and far smarter than its reputation when finished with stone or brick edging.
Gravel — the right answer for rural properties and long drives; cheap to lay, easy to top up, and it suits period houses.
What a Proper Installation Involves
Excavation to solid ground (clay demands deeper digs than most national price guides assume), a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base thick enough for vehicle loads, edge restraints so the surface can’t spread, correct falls and drainage, and only then the surface itself. Skip any of those steps and the driveway telegraphs it within a few winters — rutting where the wheels sit, puddles at the low corner, weeds in the failed joints.
