Grappenhall sits on the edge of our Warrington patch, and this side garden is a good example of the brief we get more than any other there: make it look designed, and make it need almost nothing from us once it’s done.
The Brief
The homeowners had a narrow side garden that had been left to itself for a season too long — long grass climbing the bin store, a cracked path, and a red-brick boundary wall doing nothing but marking the edge of the plot. They didn’t want a lawn to mow in a space that size. They wanted somewhere that looked cared for every day of the year, with planting that added life rather than maintenance.
The design brief, in their words, was simple: make this garden maintenance-friendly, using natural stone. No weekly mowing, no borders that get away from you by July.
Our Approach
A lawn was never going to work in a garden this width and this shaded — it would have thinned out within a season and needed constant attention to look presentable. Instead we designed around three natural materials: slate-effect Indian sandstone for the patio and steps closest to the house, a curved gravel path threading through the garden in two contrasting chippings, and raised brick-edged beds for structural planting.
We sourced the sandstone and aggregates directly from a stone supplier’s yard, choosing tones that would sit comfortably against the red brick of the house and the boundary wall rather than fighting it. The existing silver birch stayed — it was the one thing already giving the garden height and character, and a new stone-and-gravel garden built around a retained mature tree reads as considered, not stripped back.
What We Built
Steps and a patio area in slate-effect Indian sandstone run from the house into the garden, giving a proper transition rather than a door opening straight onto gravel. Beyond that, the path curves rather than running straight — partly to make a narrow plot feel less like a corridor, partly because a curved edge in two gravel tones reads as designed rather than functional.
Raised beds in brick, edged to match the house, hold dark, weed-suppressing mulch and structural planting rather than a border you need to get on your knees for every weekend. The birch tree’s base is worked into the bed layout rather than boxed off as an afterthought.
The Result
What was rough grass and a cracked path is now a garden that looks the same in November as it does in June — which was the entire point. There’s no lawn to fail in the shade, no border that gets away from anyone over a busy summer, and the natural stone and gravel combination will still look right in ten years with nothing more than an occasional top-up of chippings.
It’s a useful reminder that low-maintenance doesn’t have to mean low-interest. A shaded side garden like this one is exactly where hard landscaping and structural planting earn their keep — and where a lawn would have been the wrong call from day one.
