Hard Landscaping Cheshire
In hard landscaping, what’s underneath matters more than what’s on top. Two patios can look identical on the day they’re finished; five winters later, one is flat and dry while the other has sunk at the corner and grows moss in a permanent puddle. The difference was never the stone — it was the excavation depth, the sub-base, the falls and the drainage. That below-ground engineering is what Cheshire Landscape Gardener sells; the beautiful surface is the part you get to enjoy.

Why Cheshire Ground Punishes Shortcuts
Most of the county sits on boulder clay, which swells when wet, shrinks when dry and heaves in frost. Paving laid on a token 50mm of compacted material — a shortcut we see depressingly often when pricing repairs to other people’s work — has nothing stable to sit on. Our standard approach is full excavation down to firm ground, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base at the depth the application demands, full-bed mortar laying rather than spot-fixing, and falls of at least 1:80 so water leaves the surface rather than living on it. Retaining walls get engineered footings and drainage behind the wall, because a wall that can’t shed water is a wall that eventually leans.
The Structural Work We Build
- Patios and terraces — porcelain, natural sandstone, granite and limestone (see patios Cheshire)
- Retaining walls and garden walls — stone, brick, block and sleeper (see walls and stonework)
- Steps, pathways and edging — the connective tissue that makes a sloping or zoned garden usable
- Driveways — block paving, resin-bound, tarmac and gravel (see driveway installation)
- Raised planters and outdoor kitchen bases — built to carry real loads
- Drainage and soakaways — often the first item on the drawing, not the last
Materials From Suppliers We Trust
We source from established UK suppliers including Marshalls and Brett Landscaping, alongside specialist natural stone importers. We’ll talk you through the honest pros and cons of each option — porcelain’s durability against sandstone’s character, granite setts against block paving — with samples in your hand, on your site, in your light.
Experience You Can Interrogate
Jason Costello has been building hard landscaping for over 30 years from our base in Mere, near Knutsford. Recent projects around Knutsford and Wilmslow are documented on our blog with before-and-after footage, and every structure we build is covered by a full workmanship guarantee. For budgeting, our 2026 cost guide and porcelain patio cost guide publish the real numbers, including the groundworks element most quotes gloss over.
