Decking in Cheshire lives a hard life. Our winters are long and wet, shade lingers, and a deck that would stay pristine in Kent can turn green and slippery here within a couple of seasons — unless it’s specified and built for the climate. That’s the honest starting point for any decking conversation, and it shapes everything we recommend, from material choice to the airflow under the boards.

Timber or Composite? The Real Trade-Off

Composite decking has become our most requested option, and in this climate it’s easy to see why: no annual oiling, far better slip and algae resistance, and colour that holds. It costs more per board than softwood, but over ten years the maintenance gap closes much of that difference.

Softwood timber remains the budget-friendly classic and looks beautiful when freshly finished — but be realistic: in Cheshire it needs cleaning and re-oiling every year to stay safe and smart. If you’ll genuinely do that (or pay someone to), it’s a fine choice.

Hardwood timber sits between the two: naturally durable, ages to an elegant silver-grey if left, and suits period properties where composite can look too uniform.

The Part You Don’t See Decides How Long It Lasts

A deck is only as good as its subframe. On Cheshire’s clay soils, ground moves and holds water, so we build on ground screws or concrete pads set below the movement zone, use treated or steel subframes with correct joist spacing for the board type, and — critically — design in ventilation. Trapped, damp air under a deck is what rots timber and breeds the algae that makes boards lethal in November. We also never deck over a drainage problem: if water pools where the deck is going, we fix that first.
