Cheshire Landscape Gardener Portfolio — Our Garden Transformations

Welcome to the Cheshire landscape gardener portfolio. Every garden in our portfolio represents a real client, a real challenge, and a real transformation. As a specialist landscape gardener serving Knutsford, Wilmslow, Altrincham, Macclesfield, Northwich, and the wider Cheshire area, we have had the privilege of working on hundreds of outdoor spaces — from modest garden makeovers to full-scale landscaping projects worth tens of thousands of pounds. Below, you will find a selection of our favourite recent projects, each with a full description of the brief, the solution, and the result.

Case Study 1: Modern Garden Retreat — Manor Crescent, Cheshire

The Brief: The clients came to us with a completely blank canvas — a new-build garden that had never been landscaped, consisting of compacted builder’s subsoil and a temporary fence. They wanted a low-maintenance, contemporary outdoor living space that their children could play in and that would look beautiful year-round.

Our Solution: We began with full ground preparation, breaking up and removing the compacted subsoil and installing a 150mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base throughout the project area. The main patio was laid in large-format porcelain tiles in a warm grey finish, with a precision-cut border in a contrasting charcoal tone. A generous area of premium-grade turf provided a play lawn for the children, edged with Corten steel to create a clean transition between hard and soft landscaping. Deep planting borders were filled with a carefully chosen mix of ornamental grasses, evergreen shrubs, and seasonal perennials to provide year-round colour with minimal maintenance. Brushed steel uplighters were set into the patio surface and connected to a smart lighting controller.

The Result: The project was completed over two weeks and transformed an unusable builder’s plot into a beautiful, functional family garden. The clients described the result as “exactly what we dreamed of” and have since referred two of their neighbours to us.

Case Study 2: Retaining Wall and Porcelain Patio — Knutsford Road, Wilmslow

The Brief: A steeply sloping rear garden on Knutsford Road, Wilmslow had defeated a previous landscaper who had quoted to simply level it without addressing the structural requirements. The clients needed a solution that was both visually appealing and engineered to last, creating usable level space from a dramatically sloped plot.

Our Solution: Following a site survey, we designed a two-tier garden with a substantial retaining wall in natural sandstone to create the level change between the upper and lower sections. The retaining wall was built on a deep concrete foundation with drainage aggregate and a land-drain channel behind, ensuring no water pressure would build up against the structure over time. The upper tier was finished with a large-format porcelain patio in a light stone effect, with a wide run of matching porcelain steps connecting the two levels. The lower tier was seeded with premium lawn grass and surrounded by a curved planting border. Recessed LED bollard lighting in the retaining wall added a stunning after-dark dimension to the garden.

The Result: A garden that had been essentially unusable for several years was transformed into a multi-level outdoor space the whole family could enjoy. The structural quality of the retaining wall received particular praise from the clients, who had been let down by another company’s inadequate approach.

Case Study 3: Indian Stone Driveway — Cheshire

The Brief: A homeowner in Cheshire had an overgrown, cracked tarmac driveway that had become an eyesore and was badly failing. The brief was for a premium natural stone driveway that would complement the period character of the property and last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Our Solution: We cleared the existing tarmac surface and sub-base entirely, excavating to the required depth before installing a new compacted hardcore sub-base and a full sand-and-cement bedding layer. The driveway was laid in calibrated Indian sandstone in a mixed-size pattern, with a contrasting kandla grey border and a bullnose kerb edge. Drainage channels were installed at the base of the slope in compliance with current permitted development requirements. The natural jointing was carried out using a polymer-modified pointing mortar for long-term durability. New planting either side of the driveway — a mix of box topiary balls, lavender, and ornamental grasses — completed the transformation.

The Result: The property’s kerb appeal was dramatically improved and the client received multiple compliments from neighbours within days of completion. The project is a perfect example of how a high-quality driveway can transform both the appearance and the value of a home.

Case Study 4: Period Property Garden Renovation — Eaton House, Congleton

The Brief: The owners of a substantial period property in Congleton required a full garden renovation that respected the heritage character of the house while creating a practical, manageable outdoor space. The existing garden had mature trees and overgrown borders that needed sensitive handling alongside new hard landscaping and planting.

Our Solution: We began with a careful clearance operation, retaining the best of the mature shrubs and trees while removing overgrown and diseased material. New pathways in natural sandstone were laid through the garden, connecting the house terrace to a new seating area in a sheltered corner. A series of raised planting beds in reclaimed brick were constructed to provide accessible planting at a more manageable height. The planting scheme was designed to complement the period architecture — a mix of traditional English roses, lavender, box hedging, and hardy perennials that would look at home in a Victorian walled garden.

The Result: A previously overwhelming garden was transformed into a beautiful, manageable outdoor space that the clients could genuinely enjoy. The sensitive approach to the existing mature planting was particularly appreciated, preserving the character of the garden while giving it a completely new lease of life.

Case Study 5: Garden Transformation — Violetway, Holmes Chapel

The Brief: A complete rear garden transformation in Holmes Chapel, replacing a neglected and poorly maintained garden with a stylish, contemporary outdoor living space for a young family.

Our Solution: The existing garden was cleared entirely, including the removal of an old timber decking structure and failing fence panels. A new porcelain patio was installed as the main entertaining area, with a curved lawn edged in Corten steel. New close-board fencing with trellis toppers provided privacy and defined the garden boundaries. A central raised flower bed in smooth rendered blockwork provided a focal point and was planted with a contemporary mix of structural grasses, lavender, and seasonal bedding.

The Result: A tired, neglected garden became a stylish family outdoor space that the clients were delighted with. The project was completed on time and on budget, and the clients have already recommended us to friends in the village.
