Transforming a Walled Courtyard in Cheshire: A Stunning Landscape Design Journey
At Cheshire Landscape Gardener, we specialize in turning outdoor spaces into breathtaking sanctuaries. One of our recent projects involved transforming a walled courtyard into a serene and elegant garden, complete with pleached trees, bespoke pathways, a charming gazebo, and a stunning stone pit water feature. But this project held even more unique surprises—the discovery of a hidden well shaft! This blog takes you through the journey of this remarkable transformation, including the uncovering and restoration of these fascinating features.
The Vision: From Blank Canvas to Tranquil Courtyard
The project began with a blank slate—a walled courtyard surrounded by rustic brick buildings. The client envisioned a garden that would complement the historic charm of the property while introducing modern landscaping elements. Our design included:
- Pleached trees for structure and privacy.
- Gravel pathways bordered by cobblestones for a timeless aesthetic.
- A central gazebo as a focal point.
- Carefully planned planting beds for seasonal interest.

Step 1: Preparing the Groundwork
The initial phase involved significant groundwork to prepare the space for landscaping. The courtyard was leveled, drainage systems were installed, and pathways were outlined with precision. The addition of cobblestone borders added texture and definition to the layout.

Step 2: Designing with Pleached Trees
Pleached trees were carefully selected and planted to create a structured yet airy feel. These trees not only add height and elegance but also provide privacy without compromising the open ambiance of the courtyard.

Step 2: Restoring the Well Shaft
Recognizing the significance of this find, we carefully cleaned out the well shaft. A new sandstone rim was crafted to give it a refined and safe edge. To showcase this historical feature while ensuring safety and adding a modern touch, we covered the well with reinforced glass and installed internal lights to illuminate it, creating a captivating focal point within the courtyard.
Step 4: Adding the Gazebo
A bespoke wooden gazebo was constructed as the centerpiece of the courtyard. Its natural wood finish blends seamlessly with the surrounding brick walls and greenery, offering both functionality and charm.
Step 5: The Final Touches
Once the hardscaping was complete, we added finishing touches such as planting beds with seasonal flowers, shrubs, and ground cover to soften the overall look. The restored well shaft, illuminated beneath the reinforced glass, became a unique and captivating feature, blending history with modern design. The result is a harmonious blend of structure, nature, and historical intrigue.
